Mountain gorillas live in forests high in the mountains. In Uganda, mountain gorillas are found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the western part of the country. The presence of dense forests in both Mgahinga and Bwindi has been the main factor for the presence of mountain gorillas in these national parks. Mountain gorillas being primarily herbivores, the majority of their diet is obtained from leaves, shoots, and stems of several plants that exceed 142 species.
Mountain gorillas have got fur a special characteristic that differentiates them from the rest of the apes. The fur enables the mountain gorillas to survive in areas that receive low temperatures even below freezing points, this, therefore, implies altitudes of about 8,000 to 13,000 feet high.
The remarkable conservation efforts by the government have been highly impressive and rewarded through the multiplication of the mountain gorilla population in Mgahinga and Bwindi National Parks
This has been enabled through setting up several organizations such as the Uganda wildlife conservation organization (UWCO), Uganda wildlife organization (UWO), and many others that have enabled the conservation of mountain gorillas in Uganda.
The findings show an impressive recovery effort with populations in the Bwindi has grown in recent years up to 604 individual, from 480 individual that was recorded in 2010 thus increasing the total global wild gorilla population to over 1,000 individuals.
The home range size of mountain gorillas can mainly be influenced by the availability of food sources and usually determined by the vegetation zones. Mountain gorillas spend most of their time in the hagenia forest regions which have an altitude that ranges between 2,800 to 3,400 meters high.
The mountain gorillas inhabit such high altitudes because of the presence of gallium vines which are a delicious meal to them since all the parts of the plant can be consumed by the mountain gorillas from stems, leaves, flowers roots, and flowers.
The mountain gorillas are well known for being highly social and live in relatively stable, cohesive groups that are held together by long-term bonds between adult males and females. However, the relationships among females are known to be relatively weak.
Mountain gorilla groups are generally head by the silverback, the silverback generally defend their groups from any attack rather than their territories, and during the movements, they lead their groups. The average length of tenure for a dominant silverback is approximately 4.7 years.
Mountain gorillas are known to be naturally humble gentle and generally shy. However on rare occasions when two gorilla groups meet, the two silverbacks of the two different groups usually engage in a fight to the death, using their canines to cause deep gaping injuries to each other.
Mountain gorillas are also known for having daily routines such as the midday rest period which acts as an important time for establishing and reinforcing relationships within different groups. Female mountain gorillas however also involved in daily activities such as grooming their young ones.
The young ones also play daily an activity that is believed to help in learning how to communicate within the group. Mountain gorillas have also got several vocalizations that can be recognized and are primarily used within groups. During the travel in the dense forests gorillas often use different vocalizations such as roars and screams that are used as signal alarms.
In most cases, mountain gorillas are naturally afraid of certain reptiles and insects which may even disrupt their movements in order to avoid them. The notable insects and reptiles that they fear include caterpillars, chameleons, and many more insects.
