To trek gorillas in Uganda you need to have a gorilla trekking permit.  A gorilla trekking permit is a document or card issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) an organization that is responsible for conservation of wildlife in Uganda to acknowledge payment and permit an individual to trek gorillas in Uganda.

Uganda is popular for gorilla safaris being home to over 50% of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. There are two homes to mountain gorillas in Uganda and these are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. What is the cost of a Uganda gorilla trekking safari?

As of 2019, foreign non-residents require US$ 600 for each gorilla permit in Uganda. Foreign residents require US$ 500 for each gorilla permit in Uganda. East African residents require UGX 250,000 for a single gorilla permit.

Effective 1st July 2020, foreign non-residents will require US$ 700 to purchase a Uganda gorilla permit. Foreign residents will require US$ 600 to buy a Uganda gorilla permit. East African Residents will still be able to purchase a gorilla permit.

Each permit is valid for individuals above 15 years of age and can be used for a single trek. Maximum of 1 hour is allowed for trekkers to be in the presence of the Mountain Gorillas.
