Rwanda Gorilla trekking rules and regulations

Rwanda is a high end gorilla safari destination and there are rules and regulations that govern the activity. Rwanda gorilla trekking rules and regulations are set to ensure that gorilla trekking is safe to undertake. For the safety of both the gorillas and trekkers, there are set rules and regulations that the Rwanda Development Board set up and expect each person on a gorilla safari in Rwanda to follow.

Even before you decide to book your trip, it is important to know these dos and don’ts for gorilla trekking in Rwanda;

  • Always wash your hands before you start the gorilla trek
  • Keep your voice low at all times of the trek. Do not make loud noises in the forest from the start of the trek to the end but you are allowed to ask questions to your guide.
  • Always maintain a 7 meters (21ft) distance from the mountain gorillas. Remember they are still wild animals and should be treated as so.
  • Do not touch the gorillas.
  • When taking photos, do not use flash photography.
  • Human waste should be buried 30cm (12”) deep. Ask your ranger guide to help you about this.
  • Respect the maximum 1 hour that you are allowed to spend in the presence of the mountain gorillas.
  • Persons with a cold or diseases that might be found infectious to gorillas are not allowed to trek the gorillas.
  • DO NOT leave any rubbish in the park it could be harmful to the gorillas.
  • DO NOT eat, drink or smoke during the mountain gorilla trek.
  • During the trek, if you must sneeze or cough cover your face and turn away from the gorillas.
  • A maximum of 8 individuals are allowed to trek a single gorilla family in a day. This is done to minimize behavioral disturbances and risk of exposure to human borne diseases.

All of these gorilla trekking rules are meant to keep the gorillas of Rwanda safe, healthy and comfortable in their natural habitat.

Who is eligible for gorilla trekking in Rwanda? – Rwanda gorilla trekking rules

Not anyone can go gorilla trekking, a person must have some qualifications and these include;

  • A person must be above 16 years of age. It is believed that by this age a child is much easier to control unlike younger ones who are unpredictable.
  • An individual must be in good health. Persons with a cold or contagious diseases are not allowed to trek gorillas since they are susceptible to human disease and can easily be wiped away by human diseases.
  • Only persons with a valid Rwanda gorilla trekking permit can be allowed to trek gorillas. Each person must purchase a gorilla permit prior before the trek to ensure they are allowed to trek. A permit costs US$ 1500.
