Which Country is better for gorilla trekking, Uganda or Rwanda?

World over, Uganda and Rwanda are among the three countries that are home to the rare mountain gorillas that survive in the dense tropical forests of East and West Africa. Planning gorilla safaris, we know best and here we do not offer a conclusive view on whether you should take a Uganda gorilla safari or Rwanda gorilla trekking safari. We give you an insight of what it is like to trek gorillas in both countries such that you can choose what is best;

Gorilla trekking in Uganda

Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. It hosts the single largest gorilla population without about 19 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. In Bwindi forest tourists who would also love to learn more about gorillas can undertake a gorilla habituation experience that can’t be found anywhere else. In Uganda still, tourists can trek mountain gorillas in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

To trek gorillas in Uganda, you need a Uganda gorilla trekking safari permit which costs as follows;

Foreign non-resident  Foreign Resident  East African Resident
2019-1st July 2020 US$ 600 US$500 UGX 250,000
July 2020 onwards US$ 700 US$ 600 UGX 250,000

Each permit is valid for individuals above 15 years of age and can be used for a single trek. Maximum of 1 hour is allowed for trekkers to be in the presence of the Mountain Gorillas.

Which Country is better for gorilla trekking, Uganda or Rwanda?

Trekking Gorillas in Rwanda

Rwanda is home to about 10 habituated gorilla families in the Volcanoes National Park which is the only habitat to these elusive giants in the land of a thousand hills. Trekking gorillas in Rwanda costs US$ 1500 for a permit. Though expensive than Uganda, Rwanda has more to do with gorilla conservation history that travelers love to engage with. The famous primatologist Dian Fossey, did her research in Rwanda and a research centre was established there. Visiting this research center helps learn more about gorillas and the conservation story as well.

The Mountain gorilla population of Volcanoes National Park is said to move for shorter distances than those in Bwindi Forest. For intending trekkers who would not wish to trek for long, then Rwanda is that high end option.

How safe is gorilla trekking?

Since gorilla trekking involves moving within the forests that are dense many wonder whether it is safe to go into the jungle. The answer is Yes, gorilla trekking is safe.

The joint security force of military, tourism police and armed rangers guarantee travelers of safety during their gorilla trekking safaris. Safety during gorilla trekking is a concern for all security forces in the countries.

Client safety is guaranteed by ensuring that the parks have armed park rangers . A total of 8 trekkers are allocated one gorilla family to trek and they go along with two armed rangers to ensure that tourists are not harmed by any wild animals. Armed rangers keep clients safe during the entire gorilla trek and ensure that travelers are safe from any harm. A head of the clients is an armed ranger as well as another one behind. When an un habituated wild animal attacks in the forest, the ranger guide shoots bullets in the sky to scare them off.

Note: However, Mountain gorillas are wild animals and should be treated as so. Always keep a seven meters distance to keep safe from the gorillas and ensure you don’t cause them to charge towards you. In case a silverback gorilla charges at you, crouch down submissively and keep calm.
